Edison township tree removal9/26/2023 On November 10, 1954, the name was formally changed to Edison Township in recognition of the inventor Thomas Edison, whose primary laboratory was located in the Menlo Park neighborhood of the township. On March 20, 1900, and March 15, 1905, respective pieces of the township were seized to create Metuchen and Highland Park. ![]() The indigenous Raritan people gave the township its first name. At the time, the township was known as Raritan. On March 17, 1870, a law passed by the New Jersey Legislature created Edison Township from a combination of Piscataway and Woodbridge Townships. Little India’s home town, Edison, had a total population of 107,588 as of the 2020 United States Census, making it the sixth-most populous municipality in New Jersey, up from fifth in 2010. The Raritan Valley region of central New Jersey, where Edison is located, is a part of the New York City metropolitan area. ![]() Middlesex County, New Jersey, in the United States, contains the township of Edison.
